The Scoring System |
(also called "The Fax Rating")
Every program on this site is scored out of ten (10) Fax Machines. Read this page before writing to me about a score. I will not be changing any scores.
Why Fax Machines
The fax machine is the most reliable piece of equipment ever built. You put the page in. You press Send. The page arrives, at the other end, on paper, with the time on it. It does not update. It does not ask you to sign in. It does not "buffer." It has no cloud. In twenty-eight years I never once saw a fax machine ask a customer to take a tour.
A fax machine is therefore a ten (10). Everything else is measured against it, and everything else comes up short.
The Scale
| Score |
What It Means |

0 Fax Machines |
"Did not turn on. Or did, and I wish it hadn't." |

1 - 2 Fax Machines |
"Worked, in the sense that I could see it." |

3 Fax Machines |
"I completed one (1) action." |

4 Fax Machines |
"Did what it said." This is the highest honor. It has been awarded once (Microsoft Paint, 2023). |

5 - 10 Fax Machines |
"Reserved for the fax machine." |
Frequently Asked Questions About the Scores
Q. Why can't a program get a five?
A. Because it is not a fax machine. See above.
Q. Isn't that unfair to the program?
A. The program should have thought of that.
Q. Do you ever go back and change a score?
A. No. A score is a score. I have been asked to reconsider Notion, by several people, at length. I have reconsidered. It is a zero (0). If I go back to a program it is to see whether it has gotten worse, and it has.
Q. Did you read the instructions before scoring?
A. No. If I need to be taught how to use it, they built it wrong. A tutorial is an admission of guilt.
Q. Has a fax machine ever been reviewed on this site?
A. It would be a conflict of interest.
