What I Was Told This Was
Slack describes itself as "where work happens." That is a big claim. Work happens at work. I have been to work. Slack was not there.
What Happened
I'll be frank: I was in Slack for forty minutes and no work happened.
First, it wanted me to make a "workspace." I already have a workspace. It is the spare bedroom. I typed "Spare Bedroom" and it accepted this, which I will note is the only time all afternoon that it did what I told it.
I typed a message to myself. It arrived immediately, so credit where it's due. I then tried to send it to Denise, who is not "in my workspace," a phrase I find presumptuous. There was a button that said "Invite." I do not invite my wife to things. She lives here.
There is a channel called #general. I looked in it. It was general.
Along the left side there is a list of what I assume are other rooms, marked with the pound sign, which in my experience is for telephone menus. I pressed one of them and nothing rang. I pressed it harder. Nothing.
At one point a small window came up offering to "show me around." I closed it. If I need to be shown around, they built it wrong. This is a principle.
I looked for the fax option. There is not one. I looked for print. I could not find it. There is a smiling face you can click that gives you a menu of more smiling faces, which I believe is where the print option used to be.
I will say the screen never went black, which is more than I can say for some programs (see Notion).
A Note on Denise
Denise called from the kitchen to ask why I was typing to myself. I do not know how she knew. I explained the situation. She leaned over, pressed something, and said "there, now it's on your phone too." I did not ask for it to be on my phone. It is now on my phone. Denise agreed the program is ridiculous, and it was already on hers, which I did not raise.
Verdict
Slack is a room where you can talk to yourself, with a pound sign on it. A fax machine also lets you send a message to yourself, but the message comes out on paper, and you can keep it.
